Real Madrid beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 to win the UEFA Super Cup

Real Madrid opened their 2022-23 season with a trophy, as they bested Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 to win the UEFA Super Cup in Helsinki, Finland. Supporters had a big celebration in T-shirts. David Alaba opened the scoring for Madrid in the 37th minute. On a corner kick, two headers found Alaba in front of a wide-open net, and he easily slotted it home with his dominant foot. Frankfurt continued to show promise after the interval but lacked purpose in the final third and it was the La Liga champions who looked the most likely to score the game's second goal. However, Benzema doubled the Spanish giants' lead after the break with a first-time finish from Vinicius Jr's cross to move second on Real's all-time goalscoring list.

It was Benzema’s 324th goal for Madrid, overtaking club legend Raúl. Only Cristiano Ronaldo has more after scoring 450 goals for the club between 2009-18. He made the No. 9 T-shirt a Real Madrid classic. "He's a very important player, a team leader," Ancelotti said. "He scored a goal today and now he's going for the Ballon d'Or award." The end result gives Carlo Ancelotti his fourth title since returning to the club last summer, and his eighth in total across both spells in the Spanish capital. Last season was Benzema's best-ever scoring campaign in a T-shirt, with 27 goals in LaLiga and a remarkable 15 in the Champions League, and in preseason so far, he's shown no signs of letting up.

Next up for Madrid is the new La Liga campaign beginning on Aug. 14. Los Blancos will be hoping to defend its title from last season. They join AC Milan and rivals Barcelona in winning the Super Cup five times, while boss Carlo Ancelotti becomes the most successful manager in the competition's history with four titles. Every time he celebrates with the players in T-shirts. The head coach named the same XI that started the Champions League final and there was a swagger to Real's play that comes with being crowned European champions for the 14th time. It was evident that for Ancelotti this match was a continuation of the 2021/22 campaign, but also preparation for 2022/23.
